In 1874, gold was discovered in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Miners rushed to the hills. General Custer and the 7th regiment were sent in to force Native Americans off their land and build a fort. When the regiment attempted the Sioux fought back, resulting in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
The result of the battle was that our outlook on how Native Americans were treated changed. The government established the "Sell or Starve Act", which basically meant that the government would treat Indians to starvation by cutting off their rations if the Indians didn't agree to the sale of their land.
